Post Image “The water bill is so high this month, why is it double than usual?” This kind of question is sometimes asked by residents who appears to be shocked by the rise of the water bills they have to pay from one month to the next.

Sound familiar? Perhaps it does not happen to you. Perhaps for some, they feel the need of an explanation.

Understand your water bill and do not wait until your bills jump up to do some checking. TMD recommends all residents to do regular checking for the following:

1)
The water-related equipment.
It’s necessary to prevent the internal leakage and that includes pipe connections, sinks, bathroom fixtures, toilets, etc. Make sure that there is no water dripping from the faucet.

2) The water meter. It should show the accurate amount of the water usage. If the water meter continues to spin when no one uses the water, close the valve immediately, and open only when you want use the water. Contact TMD to check the condition and if necessary, ask for a replacement.

What must I do when I go on holidays or leave my house vacant for a certain period of time until it is rented? TMD recommends that you lock the water meter. This is to avoid water theft or leakage. When you ask to reopen it, there will be no charge. However, if you fail to do so and water leakage occurs causing a rise in your water bill, do understand that you will be obliged to pay off the entire bill. It is ultimately the responsibility of the resident or owner to ensure that you keep your water connections and water meter safe from possible tampering.

Our TMD officers regularly check the condition of the residents’ water meter. Make sure that they can access your water meter. Do not place anything around it or cover it with flower pots or even cement it. If you have pets or dogs and leave them alone in your property when you are away, do not tie them up near the water meter. Accurate reading of your water meter and a check on its condition is necessary to make sure that you are billed according to your water consumption.

Understanding how TMD works when it comes to your water billing and maintenance of the water meter helps remove those uncertainties when you receive your bill next time.

Be water wise to reduce consumption and bring those bills lower.
Help us bring you better service the next time we visit your home to inspect the water meter.
