Post Image Cycling has been trending for some time. However, since the pandemic, we see even more cyclists on the road wanting to keep fit and healthy. Before taking the bike out and cycle alone or in a group, think safety first. When going in a group as a way to keep in touch with your friends while staying apart, make sure that your make safety a priority.

Stay on a bike lane and if there are no special lanes for bicycles, share the road! Respect to other road users.

Here are important tips for safe cycling:

1) Follow the cycling etiquette and obey the traffic signs and regulations. Cyclist is not different from other road users. If we are not disciplined, how can we ask others to behave in an orderly manner?
Stay in bike lane. Never cycle against the flow of the road.
Don’t overtake from the left. Other drivers usually will not suspect that there are bicycles that overtake from the left, so they are not prepared for the worst situation arising. Pay attention to the road beside and behind you
Don’t cross the road dividing line.
Use your hands to give a signal on which way you are going. This is an unwritten rule for bicycle users, but it’s important for your own safety.
Prepare both hands to brake, if with one hand you might not be able to stop right away. Don’t cycle too close behind other vehicles to prepare a safe distance when you brake. This is important specially in the rainy season as the brakes always decrease when wet.
• If you are cycling in a group, make sure that no one gets in the way of other motorised vehicles and when stopping please don't gather too many that can disturb others, and don't litter.

2) Wear a proper equipment for cycling:
• Dress properly and use bright colors.
• Wear a helmet.
• In the rainy season, use a raincoat that doesn’t interfere with your movements.
• Don’t use headphones (from Walkman or handphone) – it can reduce the alertness of cyclists to their surroundings.
• Use lights at night. It will help you to see the direction and condition of the road and other drivers in front to see where you are. Also add lights on the back of the bike, or at least a reflector.
• Always take care and look after your bike’s condition – do regular maintenance.
