When Power is Turned Off

What happens and why does it happen?

These questions naturally come to mind when we experience a power outage in our home and in our neighbourhood.

The National Electric Company (PLN) regularly performs maintenance work and at times, do repairs or upgrades that are needed to ensure the safe and stable distribution of power supply. When PLN is required to turn off power due to the work it will undertake on its installations and distribution substations, PLN will send a notification to TMD so we can disseminate the information to our residents via email or Whatsapp blast. This will give everyone sufficient warning and preparation for the power outage.

However, unforeseen and emergency conditions may occur which result in a power interruption. The information will not reach residents beforehand but TMD immediately coordinates with PLN and proceed to communicate and clarify the power outage when it occurs in specific residential areas within Lippo Village.

What are the reasons when PLN turns off the power?

• For public safety and security.
• For the safety of the PLN personnel who is on duty.
• The safety of electrical installation equipment owned by residents and PLN.

Similarly, when there is an electrical power outage because of heavy rains or flooding, it is necessary for residents to know that PLN cannot turn on electricity if one of the four conditions occurs:

1) There is a submerged house.
2) The substation distribution is submerged.
3) The substation distribution and residential house is submerged.
4) The main substation is submerged.

During heavy rains resulting in advancing flooding or large puddles of water, residents are reminded to:

1) Turn off electricity from the meter circuit breaker (MCB).
2) Remove all electronic equipment that uses electricity from the wall socket.
3) Store electrical equipment in a safe place.
4) Before turning on electronic equipment and electricity, make sure everything is dry.

Before restarting the electricity, PLN officers must ensure that the equipment in the distribution substation is ready to operate.

This is the time when we must practice extreme caution and help ourselves and neighbours by actively removing any hazards near and within our area and be a little bit more patient and understanding while workers are practically keeping us safe.

A word of caution: Turn off power and electrical appliances during severe weather conditions. Safe steps keep us away from harm.
