Pets make cities better. People with pets tend to get more exercise, report less loneliness and stress, and have stronger social ties. So, when communities work to be pet friendly – when city pets are part of city conversations – it’s an investment in health and well-being for everyone. Indeed, pets bring happiness to a home and especially to children who love to play with their favourite pet. Keeping a pet at home comes with responsibilities, making sure that they are well cared of, well fed and stay healthy. Pet owners are the first ones to make sure that their pet stays safe, within their own environment and when walking out with them in their neighbourhood.

It is always best to get your neighbours to know that you have a pet and maybe even introduce your pet. Assure your neighbours that your pet will not be a disturbance nor will pose any harm to them.

It is also a normal human reaction that when a strange pet or a stray in the neighbourhood is seen, this may cause some neighbours to complain. Let us work together to see that this does not happen. Let’s be a more pet friendly community and help preserve the quality of life in our town.

How can we be a better and pet friendly town? Here’s how:

• Make sure your pet do not disturb or pose any danger to other residents. Keep your dog or pet on a lease. Suggested distance is a maximum 2 meters with a leash. If necessary, put a muzzle for your dog to avoid biting other people or other animals when you bring them outside.
• Clean after your dog or pet. Don’t leave dog poop in public areas, on a empty lot or your neighbour’s yard. If your household staff is walking your dog, please remind them to always bring a plastic or paper bag and collect the ‘poop’.
• Identify your pet with a tag. If there is no tag, it will be considered a stray.
• Keep your pets washed and clean. Feed on regular basis to prevent them from barking or making loud noises that disturb your neighbours.
• Getting your dog or pet a rabies vaccine is a must. Make sure you have the medical records so that you are reminded when to get them their regular vaccination.
• Provide and secure a proper place to keep your pets and keep it clean from dirt, food waste. When cleaning out their pet stall, let wastewater run to the sewerage and not to the drainage.
• Adjust the number of pets you have with your home size to avoid possible medical and discomfort to your household.
• Certain animals are protected by the Government. Ensure that you do not harbour any endangered species nor farm or traded animals.

Care for your pet and don’t let them loose. Contact our Call Center at 557 77 557 if you unintentionally left your pet roaming around outside your home. Our TMD Animal Control team is ready to help and will catch them to prevent them from disturbing other neighbours but they keep them until identified or claimed by the owner. Any costs incurred for their food or for medical expenses while under the care of the TMD Animal Control will be borne by the owner. It is only fair. Please claim within 3 days. Pets not claimed will be handed over to a pet adoption center.

Let us make our town a happy place where we can also welcome pets!
